What's the "signature sin" for men in our community?

Last week Steve W, Jim S and I had the pleasure of meeting with Pastor Scott Bloyer, the keynote speaker for our 2019 conference. Scott blessed us with about two hours of his time to get acquainted, hear about his vision for men’s ministry, and flesh out event preparations. It was an inspiring conversation with deep discussion on many joyful as well as hard topics.  This year’s conference promises to be excellent!

Scott asked us: what is the signature sin of all men in our community? There were several good answers. I suggested “Idolization of Self”: considering yourself God and adopting the attitude of the lyrics around I did it “My Way”.  As I reflect on that, I think my self-centeredness comes from the worst aspect of PRIDE. St. Augustine wrote, “Pride is the commencement of all sin because it was this which overthrew the devil, from whom arose the origin of sin; and afterwards it subverted [man] in the same way in which he himself fell. For the serpent, in fact, only sought for the door of pride whereby to enter when he said, ‘Ye shall be as gods.”

If I want to be my own “mighty man” I won’t be God’s mighty man: I’ll resist the true Christian fellowship described in the Bible, and I won’t be a blessing to my family, my church and my community.

Brothers, we are called to something much better than rugged individualism. Mark your calendar to reserve Saturday, Oct. 26th, for “Crashing the Divide: Seeking Unity”.

A Crash of Rhinos!

For those of you who know me – this is one of my favorite topics and this is for the GMM guys who know me really well. One of the books that had a big impact on my spiritual walk was “The Barbarian Way” by Erwin McManus. I was at one of those seasons of life that I thought I would retire from Christian ministries – I has done my part and it was time for the young ones to carry on. This book changed my direction and I find out that retirement from my Christian ministries was not an option.

But my favorite of all is the group designation for Rhinos. You see, rhinos can run thirty miles an hour, which is pretty fast when you consider how much weight they’re pulling. They’re actually faster than squirrels, which can run up to twenty-six miles an hour. And even then who’s going to live in dread of a charging squirrel! (Sorry—that was a bit off the point.) Running at thirty miles an hour is faster than a used Pinto will go. Just one problem with this phenomenon. Rhinos can see only thirty feet in front of them. Can you imagine something that large moving in concert as a group, plowing ahead at thirty miles an hour with no idea what’s at thirty-one feet? You would think that they would be far too timid to pick up full steam, that their inability to see far enough ahead would paralyze them to immobility. But with that horn pointing the way, rhinos run forward full steam ahead without apprehension, which leads us to their name.

Rhinos moving together at full speed are known as a crash. Even when they’re just hanging around enjoying the watershed, they’re called a crash because of their potential. You’ve got to love that. I think that’s what we’re supposed to be. That’s what happens when we become barbarians and shake free of domestication and civility. The church becomes a crash. We become an unstoppable force. We don’t have to pretend we know the future. Who cares that we can see only thirty feet ahead? Whatever’s at thirty-one feet needs to care that we’re coming and better get out of the way.

We need to move together as God’s people, a barbarian tribe, and become the human version of the rhino crash. The future is uncertain, but we need to move toward it with confidence. There’s a future to be created, a humanity to be liberated. We need to stop wasting our time and stop being afraid of what we cannot see and do not know.

I hope you enjoyed this as much as I did.

I attended a couple of Christian meetings this week and whether it be with a group of pastors or a group lay people the Rhino message keeps coming to the forefront for me.   I am excited to see Christians engaging in what is around them and making a difference in what they see.
One of the pastors this morning said that he will be praying about Unity for our Nation tomorrow at the “Day of Prayer” event but his concern was how to pray for a nation that is so divided. Prayer is our major tool for engaging with the enemy that is out there at about 31 feet and they must beware of what is coming when Christians are united.  This is going to be a powerful event to see a united front in Prayer.  I do have to tell you that this pastor qualifies as a Rhino, he will be bringing a message of Unity – Hope – Engaging – and Confidence.   AMEN

So are you part of “A Crash of Rhinos”?

Are you going full steam ahead with no worries?

Are you moving toward the future with confidence?

We are an unstoppable force when we Unite!

PS: I would still like to have a GMM Conference with the theme of “A Crash of Rhinos”. So if you think that would make a great theme also – please email the GMM Board at:   gmmgodsmightymen@yahoo.com   Thank You….

Take care of MY People!

** One of my favorite talks is about ministering to the people who are in front of you. It may be the store clerk, a waitress/waiter, or someone on the street. I believe when we encounter people they should know we are Christians by the way we greet them. So the story below was just after I retired and had this look of what do I do now.. This incident below hit me really hard – sometimes God puts people right in front of us and we have a choice on how we respond. Do we take care of His people or just keep on walking and do nothing… **

I was doing one of my Wilderness walks today and my prayers have been about what am I going to do since I have just retired.   As one of my previous blogs stated – one of my wilderness walks is to go on the Greenway, it is just at the end of my street.      I had some great visits with my Advisory Pastors this week but nothing is sinking in yet.
Just as I am starting my walk I look down the Greenway a little bit and there is this young man sitting on his duffle bag.   As I get closer he has his face in his hands and I thought he was just resting.  He looked up so I asked him how he was doing – isn’t that what you are supposed to do?   His response was “Oh just living out of my bag” > OH… now what am I supposed to do?   We had a brief talk and some pleasantries were passed, and as I am walking away I say “God Bless You”.    You have to understand that this is not normal for me – but it felt like I should say it.  He had this big smile and said back to me “God Bless you also”.
I then proceeded to get back to the my Wilderness walk on the Greenway and I was not more than 30 feet past this young Man and God started his talk with me>>>>.   He told me that I had been praying about what I am going to do in retirement and I just walked by what he wanted me to do……….   “Take care of My People”    So I turned around and went back to this young man and told him:   “I said God Bless you but I failed to bless you”.   So I handed him some money (I cannot tell you how much but I wanted to bless him) and then I told him to go have lunch…    Now his response is what really did it for me….  He stated:  “It is all about Jesus and thank you” –   this is one of those WOW moments and he must have been sitting there praying when I walked up the first time.

So there was my answer to what I am supposed to do in retirement:  “Take care of God’s People”.  I do not know what that looks like as I go forward, but I do know that I cannot miss those opportunities again.   As I walked away I told him I knew the battle was hard that he was going through and I wished him good luck.
We as Christians are in a battle at the present time – and there are even a few Christians who are homeless living out of their bags.    I must be looking for those opportunities to help God’s people in need and I am excited to see what that looks like as I walk with Jesus in this new season of life.

**Diane and I shared a song on Face Book recently that was about those times that God does not seem to be taking care of our problems at the present time – but I am still going to Trust in Him as I go forward…     I believe that this song was this young man’s life…    Please enjoy listening to it…  (It is a very powerful song)
Lauren Daigle – Trust In You:

So Please look for those opportunities God put’s in front of you help His People.

You just might be the answer to someone’s Prayer……….

And who knows – you just might be helping an Angel.

If you walk by – get ready for those talks from God – then turn around.

YOU WILL BE BLESSED!

Jonathan and His Armor Bearer You gotta be one or the other:

** I attended several Promise Keepers conferences when they started in Boulder CO and moved to Denver CO. I believe Men need to fight the Battle with one or more Men beside them or they will fail. So this story about Jonathan was one of the reasons I do Men’s ministry. **

I have had a few conversations lately about doing something (Matthew West’s song) and also a few changes in the format of the GMM Conference.  The first year we put together the GMM Conference we had a couple of local Pastors do a 20 minute talk that focused on the GMM Theme.  Pastor Jeff did one on Jonathan and His Armor Bearer that really brought back doing something as a major item.

Here is the story:
1 Samuel 14: 1>14 – 1. One day Jonathan son of Saul said to his young armor-bearer, “Come, let’s go over to the Philistine outpost on the other side.” But he did not tell his father.  2. Saul was staying on the outskirts of Gibeah under a pomegranate tree in Migron. With him were about six hundred men, 3. among whom was Ahijah, who was wearing an ephod. He was a son of Ichabod’s brother Ahitub son of Phinehas, the son of Eli, the Lord’s priest in Shiloh. No one was aware that Jonathan had left.  4. On each side of the pass that Jonathan intended to cross to reach the Philistine outpost was a cliff; one was called Bozez and the other Seneh. 5. One cliff stood to the north toward Mikmash, the other to the south toward Geba.  6. Jonathan said to his young armor-bearer, “Come, let’s go over to the outpost of those uncircumcised men. Perhaps the Lord will act in our behalf. Nothing can hinder the Lord from saving, whether by many or by few.”  7. “Do all that you have in mind,” his armor-bearer said. “Go ahead; I am with you heart and soul.”    8. Jonathan said, “Come on, then; we will cross over toward them and let them see us. 9. If they say to us, ‘Wait there until we come to you,’ we will stay where we are and not go up to them. 10. But if they say, ‘Come up to us,’ we will climb up, because that will be our sign that the Lord has given them into our hands.”  11. So both of them showed themselves to the Philistine outpost. “Look!” said the Philistines. “The Hebrews are crawling out of the holes they were hiding in.” 12. The men of the outpost shouted to Jonathan and his armor-bearer, “Come up to us and we’ll teach you a lesson.”  So Jonathan said to his armor-bearer, “Climb up after me; the Lord has given them into the hand of Israel.”  13. Jonathan climbed up, using his hands and feet, with his armor-bearer right behind him. The Philistines fell before Jonathan, and his armor-bearer followed and killed behind him. 14. In that first attack Jonathan and his armor-bearer killed some twenty men in an area of about half an acre.

As Jeff had stated in his talk:  “We need to be one or the other – A “Jonathon” or A “Armor Bearer” = but we cannot sit back and do nothing.  What does each of these roles look like?

Jonathon:   As you see – he is the one that got tired of sitting under the tree and said “let’s go over to the Philistine outpost”.  He needed to be doing something – and doing nothing was not an option – even if it meant failure..    One of the major things that hit me was – he was not going to do it alone, he wanted someone to go with him.  As Jonathon we also need to go forward with someone beside us to watch our back and give us a hand when it is needed.  (The Armor Bearer Responded  “Go Ahead: I am with you heart and soul”)

The Armor Bearer:   His role was a support role and like Jonathon – it was not an option to sit back and do nothing.   He was there to be Jonathan’s right hand man and he would have died along side of him doing God’s work.

**As you can see at the end – they were successful and God did his work through them because of their Obedience of going forward.

So my question is:   What are you doing in going forward?   Sometimes as Jonathon we do not have a very clear picture of what God is calling us to do…   But sitting back and doing nothing is not an option…    Also the next question is:   Who is going along side of you or who are you going along side of in doing God’s work?   But as you see – we need to be in the position of one or the other….   We need to be a Jonathon or the Armor Bearer.

***I really enjoy helping someone in going forward with their vision of what God is working through them…   There is nothing more fulfilling to help someone be successful as God is working through them…  I could be an Armor Bearer all the time….

So go forward as a Jonathan or a Armor Bearer – even if you are not sure of the outcome!!
Sitting under a tree is not an option – and obedience requires that we do something….

We Must Be Like Tigers and Rhinos

I will be bringing back some of my favorite Blogs for the next few weeks – starting Friday we will be doing a 21 day Prayer Vigil for the upcoming Conference – Please check out the Prayers and join us.

I just had to bring this Blog back — it was a book that motivated me to help in getting GMM Started…  and since our main Speaker is Erwin McManus this year – it is really special.    If you have not read the book   “The Barbarian Way”  you need too.   This is the first Blog that I ever posted… and most of it comes from the book…   I have always wanted a GMM Theme called…    “Going forward like a Crash of Rhinos”  —  but I just cannot get the GMM Team to go along with me………    Someday it will happen…                      ENJOY

Excerpts from the Barbarian Way (Erwin Raphael McManus)
Although the force of one person fully committed to God is tremendous, it pales in comparison to the force of God’s people moving together.  One barbarian wandering through civilization can be discarded as nothing more than an oddity.  But when members of the barbarian tribe line up across the battlefield side by side, something amazing begins to happen;  Dark kingdoms tremble; the dungeons and prisons that hold men, women, and children captive crumble; prison doors open; chains unlock; and multitudes come to freedom.  Whenever the barbarians of Christ pass through civilization, the oppressed and forgotten are soon found dancing in the streets.

Tigers

A tiger will defeat a lion in battle; but five lions will defeat five tigers because lions fight together and the tigers do not, so the five lions take on one tiger at a time.

**Do our church’s today look like this – battle by them self only to be defeated by a group of advocates who would like to see the church fold – what if the church’s banded together – a powerful force would be going forward.

Barbarians are far more tiger than lion.  I am convinced the old adage is true, at least in this case, that a tiger can never change its stripes.  More than that, we do not want to domesticate the tiger.  We don’t even want the tiger to try to become more like the lion.  But imagine what it would be like if tigers could learn how to move together, it tigers would choose to stand side by side and engage in battle as one tribe.

**That is what GMM is trying to do – each church is unique but if they were going side by side fighting the Spiritual Battle that is real – then they could not be defeated.

Jesus description that “the kingdom of heaven has been forcefully advancing, and forceful men lay hold if it (Matthew 11:12) – is a call for tigers to move together, not for our untamed faith to be domesticated.

Rhinos

Rhinos can run at thirty miles an hour, which is pretty fast when you consider how much weight they’re pulling.  Running at thirty miles an hour is faster than a used Pinto will go – just one problem with this phenomenon:  Rhinos can see only thirty feet in front of them.  Can you imagine something that large moving in concert as a group, plowing ahead at thirty miles an hour with no idea what’s at thirty one feet?  You would think that they would be for too timid to pick up full stream, that their inability to see far enough ahead would paralyze them to immobility.  But with that horn pointing the way, rhinos run forward full steam ahead without apprehension.

**What if the men of GOD would go forward like a Rhino with Christ at the point.   When Christ calls us to go forward – how many times do we stop because of the unknown – we should be like that Rhino running at full steam…

Now this leads us to what a group of Rhinos are called. Who cares that we can only thirty feet ahead?  Whatever’s at thirty-one feet needs to care that we’re coming and better get out of the way.
We need to move together as God’s people, a barbarian tribe, and become the human version of the Rhino Crash.  The future is uncertain, but we need to move toward it with confidence.  There’s a future to be created, a humanity to be liberated.  We need to stop wasting our time and stop being afraid of what we cannot see and do not know.  We need to move forward full force because of what we do know.

**GMM is pushing men to step up to the plate and be the men that GOD had planned for them to be.  We cannot sit back and wait – we must go FORWARD and it must be at full force.

Making the STAND!

The year 2020 is a year I believe that we as Christians are going to be required to make a stand in what we believe. As you can see this year has not started out well. Wes Walton did a talk about taking the stand of a Cheyenne Dog Soldier that I believe is must in today’s world. Enjoy….

In several of my last Blogs I have written about the need to make a Stand in what we believe.   I received an email from Promise Keepers and here is the only thing on the email (You clicked on it for a connection to a Web Site).

“The Battle Lines have been drawn

Boldly declare your Side.”

Promise Keepers them this year is:    Battle Lines…     I may have to buy the CD’s and listen to the speakers…
This reminded me GMM’s very 1st Conference and the message that the main speaker Wes Walton brought was aGMMa 015bout the Cheyenne Dog Soldier.   He talked about the Role of a Dog Soldier:

Role: A dog soldier is a highly aggressive and effective combatant, staking themselves into the ground in order to protect their companions until their retreat or every last enemy is defeated. They will fight till their last breath and by any means necessary to protect their allies.

Wes’s message was about:   Are we willing to place our stake in the Battle Field of winning souls for Jesus Christ until everyone has been saved?   Are we willing to give everything to protect our fellow Christians?    To take on this role of being Men for Christ: it is a life changing role and are we willing to put our Stake in the Ground?
I had to smile after the 2010 Conference – everyone had this saying of becoming a –    CDS   – it was a great motivator in going forward for the cause of Jesus Christ.
The theme of the 2010 Conference was   “How Big is Your God”   awesome way to start a ministry.   To take our Stand for Jesus Christ – we must understand how big our God is.    We must get into our Bibles and read the stories of the Men who put their stake in the ground and took that step of Faith.   (Read Hebrews 11).
This year has brought me back to my roots of why GMM was started – am I becoming that Cheyenne Dog Soldier and fighting the Battle that needs to be fought?     I know that I must make that “STAND” – now what does it look like for me?

Now here is the question for you:

Are you willing to become a Cheyenne Dog Soldier?

Are you willing to make the STAND for Christ?

“The Battle Lines have been drawn

Boldly declare your Side.”

Can you walk on Water?

Peter has always been one of my favorite characters in the Bible. He has the faith that I wished I had and the will to take a step out to believe that he can do it. Like him though we may stumble…. Pastor Jason had a great talk about Peter a few years ago at one of GMM Conferences and he reminded me that Peter was not alone when he stepped out of the Boat. There were other Disciples with him and even though they did not follow Peter, they were there to pray and help him. We also need a boat full of men supporting us.

I have really enjoyed ready my most recent book…   and this quote got me really thinking and on the Tuesday Night GMM Bible Study we discussed this a little.   (I will be sharing some quotes from the book in my Blog – They will be in Bold).
“To Live outside of God’s will puts us in danger:  to Live in His will makes us Dangerous.”
There is so much truth in that statement… I have to make sure that I am in constant contact with Christ in my Daily walk to make sure that I am following His will.   “The only way that I could truly follow God was to die to myself and to live for him.  Only dead men can follow the God of the Cross.”  When we have done this – it can get scary – this means we are trusting Jesus in all aspects of our lives.  This has been on ongoing work for me – to trust in Him totally with everything.   You know God has a way of helping us get there – there will be those circumstance that will REQUIRE that we give it all to Him.

I like one of the sections in this book:   Peter Walking on Water:

Matthew 14: 27 > 31a.  27 But Jesus immediately said to them: “Take courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid.”  28 “Lord, if it’s you,” Peter replied, “tell me to come to you on the water.”  29 “Come,” he said.  Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water and came toward Jesus. 30 But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried out, “Lord, save me!”  31 Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him. “You of little faith,” he said, “why did you doubt?”
There is a great book about this that is a must read:   If You Want to Walk on Water, You’ve got to Get Out of the Boat, by John Ortberg – This is a great study for a Men’s Group.  As Peter we are going to want to take that Step of Faith into what is invisible to accomplish what God has planned for us.  And like him – we may fail and look at the issues at hand instead of at Him.   But we must remember – As with Peter – He will Reach out and Catch us.
“To follow Jesus is to engage in the invisible.    Who will not shrink back?  Who will become an unstoppable Force?   Only those that see the invisible!”
One of the scriptures that is used to describe what this looks like comes from the Faith Chapter in Hebrews: 11: 24 > 27 – By faith Moses, when he had grown up, refused to be known as the son of Pharaoh’s daughter. 25 He chose to be mistreated along with the people of God rather than to enjoy the fleeting pleasures of sin. 26 He regarded disgrace for the sake of Christ as of greater value than the treasures of Egypt, because he was looking ahead to his reward. 27 By faith he left Egypt, not fearing the king’s anger; he persevered because he saw him who is invisible.
So it has been one of those years – I am being molded in a way that I have to turn it all over to Him – so that I can be in his Will.   I have to tell you it has been adventure that is very Scary and Dangerous at the same time.  But it has been an Awesome journey walking with Jesus – I would not give up any of the challenges that have gotten me there.

So what does it look like for you to Be Inside of God’s Will?

Are you willing to give up Self to Live for Him?

It will be an adventure that will make you Dangerous!

What are you taking to Heaven with You?

Another one of my favorite blogs. My Dad is my foundation of my Christian faith and walk. He raised me in a Christian home and was a great example for me to follow. When he passed away – my Uncle Andy told us how he started his Christian journey (it was after the death of my 10 day sister). In his last years who got the awful disease of Alzheimer’s and was challenging at times, but we also had some fun times. Below is one of them….

I would like to share a recent story with you about an incident my Dad did,   but I have to let you know he has Altimerzzz (Alzheimer’s).   He knows me when I come to visit, so I am good with where he is at…   I have always told him that he is the Founder of GMM because Mom and he had me, but he still does not know what GMM is… (But all is good).
Well recently, he loaded his Car with stuff to go see his Mom – his Mom is in Heaven.   My sister questioned, what he meant by that and he stated – “You know what I mean.”     Well we thought it was his time – we have heard of people who get close to going home (Heaven) that they know when it is time.   Well he did not go home – but we believe it is close.
I have a good time with my Dad – he really made me laugh when we finally found what he had put in the Car.   When I arrived at my Dad’s home that afternoon and we knew that he was OK – my brother seemed to be missing some items so I asked him if he checked out the car.
Well here are the items my Dad was taking to Heaven.

  1.  Pajamas
  2. Shoes
  3. Empty Medicine Holder
  4. T. V. Remote
  5. My Brothers Bills – not sure why he grabbed these but not a bad place to take them.
  6. Bath Room Scale
  7. Blood sugar Tester
  8. Razor
  9. And the Dog (Precious) – now if you knew the Dog – this was a good thing…  he did roll down the window for the Dog.

What an assortment of items to take to Heaven…   just to let you know, his car has not been started for several years and it has a flat tire…. So no chance in him driving it.    We questioned him about the items – but he just smiled… and so did we.       My Dad raised us in a Christian family – so with this Disease I enjoy seeing that he still knows where he is going when he dies.
So it made me think – Do I have the Assurance that my Dad has about where I am going when I die…   and what will I take with me.   I believe I am going to Heaven – but what really scares me is that someday I will be packing a car with some stuff to take to heaven with me.

So do you have that Assurance of your Salvation??

We do not know what life is going to bring and like my Dad you may have a Disease someday that will take your memory.

So today – make sure you know which direction you are going when you die.

Do Mosquitos have free will?

This is one of my Favorite Blogs – it is a conversation that I had with my 7 year old Grandson who is 13 now. Just recently he had one of those great questions again when he listened to a sermon about one of Jesus’s parables. The one about the 3 guys who received talents (1 – 2 and 5). “When asked what other guys, he stated: “The one who invested his Talents in the stock Market and lost it all.” Great question – do you know the answer or explanation.

Now this is a great Question – and I recently had a conversation with my 7 year old Grandson about it.   We were talking about Mosquitos biting me and during my conversation with Jonah – I had stated that I really hate Mosquito Bites.  I asked him if God knows this – Do you think he can make the Mosquitos leave me alone.

Now here is his response:  PaPa – I believe that God can prevent them from biting you if he wants – then he stated – but Mosquitos may have Free Will like us and they may have a choice to Bite you or Not to Bite You.  We finished the conversation with how Jonah and I have free will to make Choices also.   I was extremely proud of my Grandson – he understood how God had made us… And he is only 7 – there are Adults who still do not get this concept.
Now to get back to Free Will:  I googled this  and a few versus came up:

  1.  Proverbs 16:9 The heart of man plans his way, but the Lord establishes his steps.
  2. Joshua 24:15  And if it is evil in your eyes to serve the Lord, choose this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your fathers served in the region beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites in whose land you dwell. But as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.”
  3.   John 7:17  If anyone’s will is to do God’s will, he will know whether the teaching is from God or whether I am speaking on my own authority.

There are more Scripture – but it amazes me that the Heart of our Young understand God’s Principle of us doing Good or Evil and that we have a choice to choose one or the other.  As the Scripture states above if we have God in our Hearts then His will – will be done.

So now comes the Question again – Do Mosquitos have Free Will?  Well only one person really knows the answer to that one…

But as for you and me – we do have Free Will – Let us make sure that it is God Working through us when we make those decisions…
