Who is your Paul – Barnabas – Timothy?

   This is a great question:  Who is your Paul – Barnabas – Timothy?  I have a really good friend by the name of Jim S. and he has been talking about Mentoring and how important it is.   Several years back my greatest pastor Bob N. stated that as men we need a Paul-Barnabas and Timothy.  So let me try to explain what that means…   It has allot to do with the Topic of Mentoring…
 Who is your Paul:  If you had a Paul in your life: that would be someone in your life who is mentoring you – answering all of your toughest questions in life and taking you forward to be the greatest you can be.   I have had several Paul’s in my life who have inspired me to keep the faith and who have helped me through my toughest times.   They have enhanced my Marriage – My relationship with my Sons – and best of all my Relationship with Christ.  My ministry would not be where it is today without them.  You need a Pual…….

Who is your Barnabas:   Paul had a Barnabas and it was one of his greatest assets.

 Acts 9:26-27  26 When he came to Jerusalem, he tried to join the disciples, but they were all afraid of him, not believing that he really was a disciple. 27 But Barnabas took him and brought him to the apostles. He told them how Saul on his journey had seen the Lord and that the Lord had spoken to him, and how in Damascus he had preached fearlessly in the name of Jesus.   Acts 11:25-26    25 Then Barnabas went to Tarsus to look for Saul, 26 and when he found him, he brought him to Antioch. So for a whole year Barnabas and Saul met with the church and taught great numbers of people. The disciples were called Christians first at Antioch.

Men need a Barnabas to go beside us as we go forward in life.  There has to be someone who is your best friend and will take a bullet for you.   There has been several times in my life that I just did it on my own – but the times I had someone beside me helping – the burden so much less.  I have acquired several Barnabas’s now and it has been so great to go forward in life having someone covering my back.

 

Who is your Timothy:  Paul had a Timothy – this was a young man that he mentored.  Do you have someone you are mentoring and teaching them how to get through life answering there toughest questions.  I have a few of my Timothy’s that also fit the role of a Barnabas as we are going forward – but as we go forward – we are fighting the battle as warriors.   There are times that I feel so inadequate in trying to help a Timothy – but some of the rewards are seeing them succeed in life.   We all have something to share and there is someone out there that needs is desperately.

So the question comes back to: Who is your Paul – Barnabas – Timothy?

Shoes at Church

I received this Story from a Pastor Bill C.  that just made my day….   The question is – when we look at people — how do we look at them.   Do we judge them by what they are wearing?  Do we judge them by what they say?   Or – Do we judge them by the most important part?

 Just a reminder of what really is important in life!!!
 I showered and shaved……………. I adjusted my tie.
  I got there and sat……………. In a pew just in time.
 Bowing my head in prayer………… As I closed my eyes.
I saw the shoe of the man next to me……. Touching my own. I sighed.
  With plenty of room on either side……… I thought, ‘Why must our soles touch?’
  It bothered me, his shoe touching mine.. But it didn’t bother him much. 
  A prayer began: ‘Our Father’…………. I thought, ‘This man with the shoes, has no pride. They’re dusty, worn, and scratched. Even worse, there are holes on the side!’
  ‘Thank You for blessings,’ the prayer went on.
  The shoe man said…………….. A quiet ‘Amen.’
  I tried to focus on the prayer……. But my thoughts were on his shoes again..
  Aren’t we supposed to look our best. When walking through that door?
  ‘Well, this certainly isn’t it,’ I thought, glancing toward the floor.
  Then the prayer was ended………… And the songs of praise began.
  The shoe man was certainly loud….. Sounding proud as he sang.
  His voice lifted the rafters…….. His hands were raised high.
  The Lord could surely hear.. The shoe man’s voice from the sky.
 It was time for the offering…….. And what I threw in was steep.
 I watched as the shoe man reached…. Into his pockets so deep.
 I saw what was pulled out………. What the shoe man put in.
  Then I heard a soft ‘clink’  as when silver hits tin.
 The sermon really bored me………. To tears, and that’s no lie.
  It was the same for the shoe man… For tears fell from his eyes.
  At the end of the service…….. As is the custom here.
  We must greet new visitors, And show them all good cheer.
 But I felt moved somehow……….. And wanted to meet the shoe man.
 So after the closing prayer…….. I reached over and shook his hand.
  He was old and his skin was dark….. And his hair was truly a mess…..
 But I thanked him for coming………. For being our guest…
  He said, ‘My name’s Charlie………… I’m glad to meet you, my friend.’
  There were tears in his eyes……… But he had a large, wide grin..
  ‘Let me explain,’ he said…………. Wiping tears from his eyes.
 ‘I’ve been coming here for months…… And you’re the first to say ‘Hi.”
 ‘I know that my appearance………..Is not like all the rest.
 ‘But I really do try………………..To always look my best.’
 ‘I always clean and polish my shoes…Before my very long walk.’
 ‘But by the time I get here……..They’re dirty and dusty, like chalk.’
 My heart filled with pain………… And I swallowed to hide my tears.
 As he continued to apologize………. For daring to sit so near
 He said, ‘When I get here………… I know I must look a sight.’
 ‘But I thought if I could touch you….Then maybe our souls might unite.’
 I was silent for a moment…………. Knowing whatever was said
  Would pale in comparison…. I spoke from my heart, not my head.
  ‘Oh, you’ve touched me,’ I said…….’And taught me, in part’
  ‘That the best of any man…………..Is what is found in his heart.’
  The rest, I thought,…………… This shoe man will never know.
  Like just how thankful I really am…. That his dirty old shoe touched my soul

I was listening to the Radio yesterday and Matthew West’s song “Do Something” came up and the last time I heard the song – it really made me think and look at what I was doing..   So please enjoy this again…

How true:   Why are we sitting back waiting for everyone else to correct the problems of the world – why are we not Doing something about it.   I have really enjoyed being part of a couple of upcoming events that people like you and I decided to Do Something.
I have another great friend and he has a heart for encouraging people – even me…   God has been working on my Wife and me at the present time – and Mike knows about it…   He sent me an article today and within the contents of the Message it was what I needed to hear… “We are not equipped to handle all the problems we face, but God is.  That’s why He told us to give them all to Him – to “Cast your burden on the Lord” (Ps. 55:22)…    Walking with Jesus does not depend on a physical action but it depends on our Heart…        This was A WOW moment.
With the few examples above – things happen when we “Do Something” and it can be as simple as an encouragement to a friend…  God has created you to do great things – enjoy the Moment…

About Us (GMM)
As mentioned, God’s Mighty Men is a non-denominational Christian men’s group dedicated to improving men’s understanding our relationship with Christ and our commitment to family our churches, and communities.
 GMM was formed in 2008 to serve Cheyenne. This being our 5th year, we now have churches from S.E. Wyoming and Northern Colorado participating in our annual spring conference.
 Conference Theme – Radical Truth & Grace this year’s conference focus is on the importance “GRACE” (love & forgiveness).
 As Christian men we have opportunities daily to exhibit Christ’s love and forgiveness in our homes our churches and the workplace.
 The Radical portion of our theme is based on the understanding of what a radical truth it was when Christ delivered his message of love and forgiveness to a world mired in a philosophy of vengeance with “an eye for an eye”.

FCA – Breakfast:

I had the pleasure of attending a FCA Breakfast yesterday and listen to some testimonies from a couple of the UW Football Players…   and the never forgotten Karsten Sween.   On their hand out was the FCA’s Vision:  “To see SE WY impacted for Jesus Christ through the influence of Coaches and Athletes.”  WOW – what a vision – and when you heard the testimonies from these guys – it showed Changed lives because of how Christ is working through them.
One of the Highlights was a Web Cast giving away the Bart Starr award – which was given to Aaron Rogers for his impact outside of football in the area of Character and Integrity.   Bart Star had made a few comments that brought purpose behind what are priorities should be – 1.  God    2.  Family   3. Other people…  He had also written Aaron a letter during some tough transitional times in Green bay because of the leaving of Bret Farve.     Three main parts in his advice were:

  • 1.   Character and Integrity had to be a major part in the transition:
  • 2.  God had a plan for you – You must Believe it.
  • 3.  We are praying for you – (Bart Starr and his wife)

This is some great advice when we are going through the tough times and making sure we have someone praying for us…
A verse that one of the athletes quoted was:      “John 10:10    10 The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.”      We must remember that Jesus came to give us not just life – but life in its fullest – and we must be aware that there is an enemy that wants to take that from us.
At the end there were small quotes from the Super Bowl players (Broncos and Seahawks) about who was first in their life.   I am always impressed when an athlete steps forward in Boldness and says who their Savior is.
I have not always been that Bold — but as my relationship with Christ grows – it is getting much easier to share my faith.
 

Enjoy the Super Bowl – but at the same time remember the gifts that have been given to these athletes and who gave it to them.

What are you going to leave behind that people will remember you by – we all have great talents – are we using them to impact people.

Do I look like a Pharisee or a Christian?

Pastor Shaun’s sermon this week was in the part of Matthew where Jesus is talking about the Pharisees and how much they were misleading the people.  While I was following his sermon in my Study Bible – the explanations about the verses at the bottom of my Bible really got my attention…
Here is the first one:
“The Pharisees’ converts were attracted to Pharisaism, not to God.  By getting caught up in the details of their additional laws and regulations, they completely missed God, to whom the law pointed.  A religion of deeds puts pressure on the people to surpass others in what they know and do.  Thus, a hypocritical teacher was likely to have students who were even more hypocritical.  We must make sure we are not creating Pharisees by emphasizing on the outward obedience at the expense of inner renewal.”
This was me in the past – I was focused on being involved/helping in everything that I could do at church.   I believed that my obedience was being extremely busy in Church and I wanted people to see my actions….  I was a really great Christian.   I missed it by doing that – I lost my relationship with Jesus by paying attention to the Law as I seen it.    It was something I even preached about and it was how I made sure that I was saved….   WOW did I miss the target.

Then this was the second part of the explanation in my study Bible:
“It’s possible to obey the details of the laws but still be disobedient in our general behavior.  For example, we could be very precise and faithful about giving 10 percent of our money to God, but refuse to give one minute of our time in helping others.  Tithing is important, but giving a tithe does not exempt us from fulfilling God’s other directives.”
      It took me a very long time to realize that when Christ came – it changed everything.   He did not want a 10% tither – He wanted all of me…   That included all of my time – possessions – gifts – monies —- every part of me.  When I gave it all to him – then my obedience came easy and it became something I desired (Obedience to Christ)..
This verse was part of my morning devotional and the last part of it really explains what are actions should be….
1 Timothy 4:12     12 Don’t let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith and in purity.

What does GOD have planned for you this year?

I was reading the paper this morning and this article by Chuck Tabor really stood out – so I had to read it…    Chuck has some great insight on how to forward this year and making sure it is what GOD has in plan for us.  This article was a great motivator as we are called to do God’s work and allow him to work through us.    ENJOY>>
One of his suggestions is:  “May I suggest that the Word of God gives us several indicators for how we can be sure that what we are doing is in line with what God Wants us to do?  These steps are centered on who God is, what God wants and What He has equipped us to do:”

  • 1.   God directs those who are already moving in the direction He has revealed in His Word.
  • 2.  God’s Word enables us to differentiate between man’s thoughts and God’s thoughts, by comparing all thoughts with the teaching of the Word of God.
  • 3.  God wants us to ask HIM for directions in prayer.
  • 4.  God wants us to consult respected counselors for their thoughts and wisdom.

Then Chuck came up with some checks and balances to make sure we have made the right decisions in going forward.
“If I were to decide to do this thing……………..”

  • 1.   Can I genuinely thank God for it?
  • 2.  Will this promote a positive virtue in my life?  (Philippians: 4:8 for guidelines –  Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.)
  • 3.  Will taking this action cause me to glorify God?
  • 4.  Will this dim my vision of Christ in any way?  That is, will I be drawn closer to Him or pushed farther away by deciding to do this?
  • 5.  Will this take away my taste for studying the Bible?
  • 6.  Will this affect my prayer life in any way?  Either enhancing it (that’s good!) or cramping it (that’s bad!)?
  • 7.  Will this decision in any way make serving Christ easier or more difficult?

He finishes it with this Great quote: – your challenge for today….

“And I will never have it that God created any man, especially any Christian man, to be a blank, and to be a nothing.  He made you for an end. Find out what that end is; find out your niche and fill it.”

The Benefits of Brokenness & Humility!

Below is an Article written by Timothy Johns —   if you have joined him in the 21 day fast and are not receiving his devotionals here is the one for Day Seventeen…  They have been very inspirational for me.      Bobbyg

Dear Loved of God,
It was pride and unbelief that opened the door to separation from God. Every form of suffering we experience on earth originates from these root sins.  Therefore, the exact opposite is what opens the door to God’s Presence and Grace.  Here are just a few Bible verses that teach us the importance of being broken, contrite, and humble:
This is the one I esteem: he who is humble and contrite in spirit, and trembles at my word. (Is. 66:2)
I live in a high and holy place, but also with him who is contrite and lowly in spirit, to revive the spirit of the lowly and to revive the heart of the contrite. (Is. 57:15) God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble. (James 4:6) All of you, clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, because, “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.” Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time. I Pet. 5:5-6
Faith, brokenness, and humility are the keys to unlock the promises of God.
Brokenness is the shattering of our self-will. Contrite means that we are repentant and eager to give God what He wants in the way He wants it. Humility is total dependence on God. In light of this, it is crucial that we know what pride and brokenness look like, so that we can avoid the first and cultivate the latter.
Here are some indicators of either pride or brokenness. This list is found in the book “Brokenness: The Heart God Revives” by Nancy Leigh DeMoss (Pages 81-86)
Attitudes toward others
1.Proud people focus on the failures of others and readily point out those faults. Broken people are more conscious of their own spiritual need than of anyone else’s.
2.Proud people have a critical, faultfinding spirit. They look at everyone else’s faults with a microscope but view their own with a telescope. Broken people are compassionate –they have the kind of love that overlooks a multitude of sins; they can forgive much because they know how much they have been forgiven.
3.Proud people are especially prone to criticize those in positions of authority – their pastor, their boss, their husband, wife or parents – and they talk to others about the faults they see. Broken people reverence, encourage, and lift up those that God has placed in positions of authority, and they talk to God in intercession, rather than gossiping about the faults they see in others.
4.Proud people are self-righteous; they think highly of themselves and look down on others. Broken people think the best of others; they esteem others better than themselves.
5.Proud people have an independent, self-sufficient spirit. Broken people have a dependent spirit; they recognize their need for God and others.
Attitudes About Rights
6.Proud people have to prove that they are right –they have to get the last word. Broken people are willing to yield the right to be right.
7.Proud people claim rights and have a demanding spirit. Broken people yield their rights and have a meek spirit.
8.Proud people are self-protective of their time, their rights, and their reputation. Broken people are self-denying and self-sacrificing.
Attitudes About Service and Ministry:
9.Proud people desire to be served – they want life to revolve around them and their own needs. Broken people are motivated to serve others and to be sure others’ needs are met before their own.
10.Proud people desire to be known as a success. Broken people are motivated to be faithful to make others successful.
11.Proud people have a feeling – conscious or subconscious – that this ministry is priviledged to have me and my gifts. They focus on what they can do for God. Broken people have a heart attitude that says, “I don’t deserve to have any part in this ministry”; they know that they have nothing to offer God except the life of Jesus flowing through their broken lives.
Attitudes About Recognition
12.Proud people crave self-advancement. Broken people desire to promote others.
13.Proud people have a drive to be recognized and appreciated for their efforts. Broken people have a sense of their own unworthiness; they are thrilled that God would use them at all.
14.Proud people get wounded when others are promoted and they are overlooked. Broken people are eager for others to get the credit, and they rejoice when others are lifted up.
15.Proud people are elated by praise and deflated by criticism. Broken people know that any praise of their accomplishments belongs to the Lord and that criticism can help them grow into spiritual maturity.
There are serious benefits to brokenness and humility. Let us contend for these heart attitudes, so we can access the grace of God.

FROM CHAINS TO FREEDOM

Some Great Words of Wisdom from Ryan…
A couple months ago I had a life changing conversation with two good friends.   I walked into the coffee shop with the chains of life wrapped all around me but left with these same chains shattered and the sweet aroma of God’s freedom enveloping my mind and heart.   It was truly a radical and amazing night.  But before I go into more detail about this meeting, let me first explain more of my background to better encapsulate this experience.
I was raised in a believing household.  There was brokenness just like every household but my parents truly did their best at making sure we stayed involved with the Church.  I accepted Christ as Savior at a young age but didn’t fully grasp or understand this decision (to a certain point) until my 10th grade year of high school.
I attended a youth mission trip to Juarez, Mexico in 1997.   I was more or less forced to go on this trip by my dad since I wasn’t in a good place spiritually at this time.  God surrounded me with amazing people of the Church and for the first time in my life I started to begin to understand who Jesus really was and is.   A foundation for my life was being built brick by brick through a continuous revelation of God’s love for me.
However, instead of pursuing the Freedom of Christ, I pursued an image of what kind of person I thought I needed to be to gain God’s favor (this has been my mindset literally up until 3 months ago.)  I was a people pleaser and would spread myself thin with commitments just for the sake of not disappointing people.   I was putting the chains of obligation, rules and checklists on myself.  I sought to impress other believers and ultimately impress God through my actions.
To be honest with the reader, this mindset of adding more law on top of existing law has only caused me much heartache and some broken relationships.  Much of the time I had little desire to follow Christ with a whole lot of obligation and guilt being the vehicle of my motivation.  I was a Pharisee and bad one at that since I rarely lived up to the standard I set for myself for many years.  This only amplified the insecurities of my life and minimized the freedom I may have experienced.
To wrap this up, let’s go back to the coffee shop.   Two guys (you know who you are) spoke words straight from the Holy Spirit into my life in regards to God’s Freedom.  I can write a book about what God downloaded into me that night.  All of these years of reading the Bible, attending Bible studies and church you would think that I would get it.  It only took me 17 years and unfortunately a lot of believers go through their whole life and never get the freedom part.
Here’s what God revealed to me….
My sin, past present and future, was paid for on the cross.  God DOESN’T see it anymore.   The only one who can stop God from seeing our sin is God Himself right?  Jeremiah 31:31-34 states “…their sins and lawless acts I will remember no more.”  Faith and desire to follow Jesus replaces a guilty conscience.  Hebrews 10:22 states, “let us draw near to God with a sincere heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled to cleanse us from a guilty conscience and having our bodies washed with pure water.”
Last year I would have told you that yes, I know this.  But I still believed that while God has forgiven me, He’s still aware of my sin and I’m constantly disappointing him.  Again, here we go with the weight of the law.  The only thing pleasing to God is our acceptance of the blood of Christ, not us!  Hebrews 10:9 states, “Then He said, “He sets aside the first to establish the second.  And by that will, we have been made holy through the sacrifice of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.”
I feel so many men of the Church have this same mindset I have had for so many years.  The chains of an image to obtain or a checklist to complete will yield nothing but a prison for one’s heart and mind.   Christ came to fulfill the law and free us from it at the same time.  It’s truly a paradox as we’re set free to be slaves for Christ.
For the first time in my life I feel free.  One might say that if God truly doesn’t see your sin anymore then that gives you a free ticket to sin as much as you want.  The truth is, is that we’re always free to sin rather we’re saved or not.  But when you understand that your sin is already washed clean and God the Father has given you a clean slate forever, beginning now, you will find that sin has less power over your life.
God’s salvation for our lives is the most awesome love story ever told.  I’m truly humbled to be His servant.  I urge all of you to step into His freedom and break the chains of guilt, obligation and checklists.

Radical Truth and Grace – 2014

Radical Truth and Grace is our next theme for our GMM Conference – but what does that mean.  The GMM Team had an Advance this last week at the Harriman Retreat Center.  We brought up this question:   What does Radical Truth and Grace mean…. As we all have different Gifts and Personalities – it does mean something different to all of us.   But I would like to share some of what we came up with….
Truth:    The main idea of truth is that is comes from the Bible – you may get it from Reading the bible – Sermons – a talk with the guys…….    But when you hear the truth – what do you do with it…   Here comes the Radical part…   When you hear truth that requires obedience that is hard to do – we must go forward in what has been required of us.
Grace:   This is giving someone what they do not deserve……   Such as:  We do not condemn someone for their sins…     Forgiving someone for something they did that you that was so egregious that it does not deserve it forgiveness……     Tipping that bad waitress 30% instead of what they deserve…
My Pastor Shawn’s sermon this week was on the 2nd Greatest Commandment to love your neighbor as yourself….    He took this to the area of loving your enemy and what the means:    Want to here about Radical Truth and Grace….    Shawn talked about the people that you really do not like or your enemies and what does the Bible tell us to do…       Talk about having Radical Truth and Grace written all over it – He really nailed it.
The portion that really stepped on some toes is what does the Bible tell us we should to for our enemies.    Here is a shorten list of some really hard items that requires obedience on our part.

  1.  Love our enemies
  2. Do Good for our enemies
  3. Pray for our enemies
  4. Turn the other Check when our enemies strike us.
  5. If they steal your shirt – give them your coat
  6. Bless them in your actions
  7. Lend to them with no expectations of returns
  8. Do not Condemn them
  9. Pardon or Forgive them
  10. Care for them when they are in need.
  11. Overcome their evil with your love.

He used a quote coming from Zack that was reallllly great: “If GOD loves someone and we do not – then we are in opposition with God”.   What a realistic quote to live up to…
