Man of the Household:

God’s Steward for Family and the Cosmos

“I bow my knees before the Father, from whom every family in heaven and on earth is named.” (Eph 3:15-16)

Men, what’s our purpose? Why are we here?

God’s Word lays out the broad perspective with the biblical account in four parts: Creation, Fall, Redemption and Restoration.

• Creation: God made Adam steward of a household, with a garden to care for and enjoy in partnership with Eve. That purpose persists in us yet, we are to glorify God. Paul wrote to the Ephesians: I bow my knees before the Father, from whom every family in heaven and on earth is named. The Greek word for family (“patria”) naturally emphasized the fatherhood of God. That grand design is imprinted on us: we have fathers—and families—because we are under a perfect Father in Heaven.

• Fall: The Bible documents the Fall, humanity’s sinful departure from God’s perfect purpose and order. The original perfect imprint is marred. Men, as a stereotype, seem resigned to ungodly purposelessness and childish self-centeredness. There’s plenty of blame to go around, but no denying that our own painful failures in areas of faith, family, fitness and finances injure our families and communities.

• Redemption. God provided the only solution: Jesus Christ’s self-sacrificial death and resurrection.

• Restoration. Until Christ returns, we are commissioned to strive faithfully, beyond our natural strength, in the power of Christ: … against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. Therefore take up the whole armor of God… (Eph 6:12-13).

C.R. Wiley calls the Bible a kind of handbook for households. Read the book of Ephesians in one sitting. It is especially relevant for stewardship of our God-given spheres of responsibility that extend into family and the cosmos: … so that through the church the manifold wisdom of God might now be made known to the rulers and authorities in the heavenly places (Eph 3:10).
